The Port of Lecco

Installed always in the most sunken creek where you face the city, in the area between the mouths of Gerenzone Caldone and streams, the port of Lecco has always been the most important of the lake. In the past it was very active, always crowded of boats used for the transport of goods, locally called -comballi-; the opening of the Paderno canal, allowing the river movement between Lecco and Milan, determined, in fact, the city with a large increase in traffic of goods improved the local economy.

This important piece of engineering was planned already for Leonardo da Vinci , many times undertaken, but only carried out by Maria Theresa of Austria in the second half of the eighteenth century. The city market then became one of the most important in Lombardy; later, however, the river traffic has been almost completely replaced by road traffic.
