The expression - città murata - indicates the quadrangular area included between the walls risen between 1159 and 1175, of which three sides still survive.
It is aa area of great historical and artistic interest, the recent works let us discover building organisms that show typological and decoration elements dated back to the centuries from the XII to the XV.
Porta Torre is situated in the middle, from 1192 it is the main access of the city and, on the south-west corner, there is the tower of the XIV century, property of the canon G. Cesare Gattoni, that used it for the famous - physical experiences- , among which the installation of a lightning rod connected to small chimes called - electrical harp.
The visit, that it is exclusively pedestrian because this part of the city has been closed to the traffic, needs of observation of the particulars, the inner spaces of the houses (courtyards, porches, etc) and of the small green spaces.
